12 E&MJ; • DECEMBER 2015 www.e-mj.com As an industrial and agricultural equipment company, Vermeer manufactures machines that make a real impact in a progressing world. Vermeer offers customers a full line of high-quality agricultural, underground con- struction, tree-care, environmental and sur- face mining equipment. Vermeer machines carry a reputation for being built tough, built to perform and built for value. Headquartered in Pella, Iowa, USA, Vermeer has a global reach and a local impact that comes through its 2,800 employees and more than 500 independent dealers world- wide. Vermeer is committed to meeting cus- tomers' needs in more than 60 nations. Those customers are at the core of the business and supported by reliable, localized customer service and support provided by independent dealers. That support has been part of the culture at Vermeer for more than six decades. A Better Way to Mine Vermeer—a pioneer in precision surface mining technology—offers a more complete solution for mining operations, with its wide experience across industries including civil infrastructure, utility installation and water management. From production to building the infrastructure required to support a large-scale mining opera- tion, the Vermeer portfolio of equipment and support solutions help mine, quarry and civil work operations bring more precision to their excavation projects and be more productive. Practical Technology The process of precision mining utilizes Vermeer Terrain Leveler ® surface excavation machines (SEMs). Vermeer introduced the Terrain Leveler concept to the mining sector more than a decade ago; it was designed to enhance efficiency and eliminate steps in the mining process. It enables soil and rocks over- lying the mineral deposit to be excavated in lay- ers to minimize further processing and increase product quality and value. Reduced shock, vibration, dust and noise from precision surface mining enables mining activities to take place closer to roads and existing structures than would be permitted by drilling and blasting. The patented top-down cutting method of the machine allows the cutter teeth to gain penetration without using the machine's trac- tive effort to drive the teeth into the minerals. Top-down cutting allows for cutting harder materials than machines that cut in an upward direction. As the unit travels forward and the drum rotates, the teeth on top of the drum advance over the top of the mineral sur- face, instantly cutting the material into uni- form-sized product in a single pass. Producing material in a uniform configura- tion allows minerals to be handled more effi- ciently than product produced by drilling and blasting. The uniform product size also allows more efficient settings on secondary and terti- ary crushing systems, savings that can contin- ue well past the primary crushing stage. The Vermeer industry-exclusive tilting cut- ter drum aids production by keeping the drum level to follow a mineral vein. It's designed to eliminate the need for primary crushers, large loaders, and large mining haul trucks and associated permits—in addition to rippers, vertical drills and explosives. The Vermeer Terrain Leveler surface exca- vation machines utilize a laser or GPS system to produce a smooth floor that can minimize wear and tear on mine trucks and loaders, especially on machines with rubber tires. This can also allow the use of off-road trucks in place of mine trucks in many cases. Vermeer and the engineering team respon- sible for its surface mining technology were inducted into the International Mining Technology Hall of Fame earlier this year.
