REGIONAL NEWS - ASIA Krasnoyarsk metal plant. In addition, the parties agreed to develop a long-term cooperation mechanism for resource development, including the joint devel- opment of nickel, copper and other resources in Russia and abroad. Norinco and Russian Machines will enhance their cooperation in the field of engineering through sharing technological develop- ments and their certification. This is expected to lead to a gradual extension of cooperation from the supply of compo- nents for railway wagons to the joint design, manufacturing and provision of maintenance services. The agreement also provides for the purchase of up to 15,000 sets of wagon components from Norinco by Russian Machines. "We've reached a new level of cooper- ation with Norinco, not only by means of expanding the scope of our joint projects, but also by investing in high-tech and innovative production which we intend to develop jointly," Deripaska said. "This agreement represents another step for- ward in the development of our econom- ic relations with China, one of the most strategically important markets for Russia. Sino-Russian trade turnover is already worth more than $80 billion. I am sure our new projects will help this figure to grow further." "Sino-Russian cooperation has a great future: not only are we neighbors, we are connected by a long history of relations based on mutual understanding and respect," Zhang said. "Our projects, in sectors that are important for both coun- tries' industries, will provide a solid foun- dation for the further development of mutually beneficial partnerships between our two countries." SouthGobi Welcomes New Border Crossings Eight new border gates specifically designed to allow the transportation of coal from Mongolia into China have been opened at the Shivee Khuren-Ceke border crossing, according to The ASIA Miner. SouthGobi Resources said the new cross- ings create a significant increase in capacity, with simultaneous access to a number of gates for export traffic. The eight new gates will be operated from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. six days per week, which is a major improvement to the previous border crossing system. All coal previously transported out of Mongolia through the Shivee Khuren-Ceke crossing had to go through a single gate with empty trucks usually admitted into Mongolia in the mornings and loaded trucks exporting to China in the afternoon. SouthGobi's President Alexander Molyneux said, "Our daily transportation record for the old border infrastructure was actually achieved recently at 409 trucks—which crossed from Mongolia to China carrying about 37,000 metric tons (mt) of coal. We believe the new infra- structure will eliminate the 'bottleneck' at the border for quite some time. The expanded border crossing should also reduce transportation costs because of more efficient truck utilization for the transport companies." SouthGobi also recently announced massive resources and reserves increases at its flagship Ovoot Tolgoi coal complex in southern Mongolia, with an updated NI 43-101 measured and indicated re- source of 302.3 million mt. The Ovoot Tolgoi coal complex is spread across two separate resource areas known as the Sunrise and Sunset fields, 320 km southwest of the provin- cial capital and about 40 km north of the China-Mongolia border, making it the closest Mongolian coal resource to China. www.e-mj.com JUNE 2012 • E&MJ; 45
