(Australia & Oceania Regional News - from p. 16) NEWS-CONTINUED opment of the mine by developing the upper ore bodies independently of the deeper underground resources and to increase the annual ore production rate from 1 million to 1.2 million mt/y. Brian Hearne, COO of Xstrata Zinc Australia, said, "We are taking early advan- tage of Lady Loretta's higher-grade zinc, which will improve the overall quality of our Mount Isa resource base. It is all part of our plan to increase production from the region." Cosmos: Xstrata Nickel Australasia placed its Cosmos nickel mine on care and maintenance in response to market condi- tions that included a prolonged period of low nickel prices and a strong Australian dollar. The company is continuing to eval- uate the newly-discovered Odysseus, Odysseus North and Odysseus Massive de- posits at Cosmos, with a view to complet- ing a feasibility study by the first quarter of NEWS-CALENDAR OF EVENTS FEBRUARY 10–13, 2013: 39th Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique, Fort Worth, Texas, USA. Xstrata Nickel Australasia's Sinclair Nickel Operation, approximately 100 km south of Cosmos, is unaffected and contin- ues to operate at normal capacity. Sinclair is expected to produce about 7,000 mt of nickel in concentrate this year. Cosmos produced its first concentrate in April 2000. Since then, more than 2.9 million mt of ore have been mined and 127,000 mt of nickel in concentrate have been produced at Cosmos, including an estimated 4,200 mt in 2012. Sandfire Produces First Concentrate at DeGrussa Sandfire Resources produced the first cop- per concentrate from its DeGrussa copper- gold mine in Western Australia during com- missioning of the project's 1.5-million mt/y processing facility in late September 2012. Mill feed was drawn from a stock- pile of 83,000 mt of massive sulphide ore at a grade of 4.5% that was mined during development activities. As of October 2, 15,000 mt had been fed to the plant. At full production DeGrussa will produce about 77,000 mt/y of copper in concen- trate and direct shipping ore. The DeGrussa open-pit will extract an estimated 143,000 mt of direct shipping ore grading 25.6% copper and 2.5 g/mt gold, containing approximately 37,000 mt of copper. Life-of-mine underground produc- tion will total an estimated 10.72 million mt of material grading 5% copper and 1.7 g/mt gold, containing approximately 541,000 mt of copper and 599,000 oz of gold. The DeGrussa project is expected to produce an average of 300,000 mt/y of concentrate grading 27% copper during its first three years of production and 220,000 mt/y thereafter, generating life-of-mine contained copper production of 480,000 mt and gold production of 270,000 oz.
