AUGUST 2018 • E&MJ 91 www.e-mj.com OPERATING STRATEGIES • Integrate spectral, multiscale, multi- sensory exploration data; • Develop self-organizing map software, which enables analysis of large amounts of data in order to fi nd typical pattern for certain deposit types; an • Develop practical guidelines and gener- ate strategies that improve relationships between industry and local actors and communities. The project has a budget of €6.9 mil- lion ($8 million) and a term of three years. Deep Look at Sustainability Looking ahead to reach a new world standard for sustainable mining at great depth, LKAB, Epiroc, ABB, Combitech, and AB Volvo have joined forces in a part- nership and are starting a unique testbed in the ore zones of northern Sweden. The testbed, to be called Sustainable Underground Mining or SUM, will be creat- ed in LKAB's underground mines in Kiruna and Malmberget and will also take the form of a virtual mine, where new technology will be developed and tested in a real mining environment to ensure that the Swedish mining industry can remain competitive and create jobs and growth, both locally in Norrbotten and nationally. After 2030, LKAB must be ready to mine at greater depth in the Kiruna and Malmberget mines. This effort, represent- ing one of Sweden's biggest industrial in- vestments ever, will require decisions to be made in the mid-2020s. This will require new control systems, new and improved mining equipment, as well as complex and effi cient management systems that meet future demands for a sustainable industry, according to the project partners. Reaching that goal will demand a new type of collab- oration, a digital ecosystem in which their digital systems and operations are linked.
