The system is a hydraulic support for the 36- kg torque gun, which is usually handheld. This reduces common risks associated with torque gun tasks, including pinched fingers, muscle strain and fatigue. South Africa-based explosives suppli- er BME showcased its AXXIS Centralized Sandvik Unleashes the Leopard The highlight of the Electra Mining 2018 exhibition was a Sand- vik product launch. Lars Engström, president of Sandvik's Min- ing and Rock Technology business area, unveiled the Leopard DI650i down-the-hole (DTH) drill rig. Sandvik's latest Leopard is designed for demanding high-capacity production drilling applications in surface mining, as well as large-scale quarry applications. "This product launch reflects the focus of all of our product development efforts: enhanced safety and service- ability, and new intelligent functions," Engström said. This new machine expands Sandvik's high-pressure DTH drill rig offering with a new model, designed for larger hole sizes. After the excitement died down, E&MJ walked around the machine with Ilkka Lahdelma, director, product management for Sandvik's surface drilling and exploration product area. "This is a new size for us completely," he said. "This adds to our product line a machine optimized for 165-mm hole sizes. So far, our biggest boom drill was the Pantera DP1500i, which had been on the market for a long time." The new Leopard handles 6-m pipes up to 140 mm. The fully- loaded carousel holds eight plus one 89- to 114-mm drilling pipes, so it can drill 53.6 m. Larger pipes, 127 mm and 140 mm, will drop the depth to 29.6 m in a four plus one configuration. The Leopard DI650i has an intelligent machine control plat- form, which can be scaled up for GPS alignment of holes, Lah- delma explained. "When the machine has reached the hole loca- tion, the intelligent system takes over the positioning and drills the hole completely," he continued. There are varying degrees of operator assist with this machine. The Leopard's silent, ergonomic iCAB cabin provides the rig operator with a safer, more productive working environ- ment. "This cab is really ergonomic and spacious with very good visibility," Lahdelma said. "It's equipped with a trainer's seat and it's designed so that noise levels will not exceed 78 dBa. All the ducts are mold- ed into shapes that push HEPA-filtered air where it's needed." A single integrated touch screen moni- tors diagnostics and mining automation dis- plays. The machine has joystick controls. No hydraulic hoses are brought into the cabin. Swinging the service doors open, Lah- delma showed how all the service points are on the ground level. "There is no need to climb on the machine," he said. "All of the filters are at this level. The engine, which is counter-balanced, is located on the left-hand side rather than the middle, making it more accessible. Batteries have been placed on a pull-out tray where they can be easily accessed even with crane." The dust control system, which typi- cally blocks the way to service points, swings out on the new Leopard. "This arrangement gives better access to service points and, when the dust drops out of the filters, it falls on the ground rather than inside the rig. Hydraulic hosing and engine have been separat- ed with firewall which minimizes the risk of fire if hose burst happens. The cooling system exhausts the air off the back of the machine away from the cabin. We did our homework and used a lot of field experience to redesign the machine." The capacity range of 403-kW Tier 3 CAT C15 diesel engine and reliable compressor is adequate for high-pressure drilling with 4-in. to 6.5-in. DTH hammer sizes. Intelligent control technology applied in both the compressor and the hydraulic system's cooler fan can reduce fuel consump- tion by up to 15% compared with conventional DTH rigs. Leop- ard DI650i's fuel efficiency is further boosted by the flow-con- trolled drilling control system that eliminates fluctuations in airflow. This makes maximum flushing pressure and penetration rates available in the most challenging of rock conditions, while still retaining the low fuel consumption of the traditional pres- sure control approach in easy ground conditions. The trade press swarms the Leopard DI650i at the Electra product launch. The Leopard DI650i drills 140-mm holes 54-m deep.
