On the other side of the world, RBL-REI will supply a com- plete belt conveyor system for La Cruz Azul's Lagunas cement plant in Mexico. The solution proposed by RBL-REI's engi- neers was selected as it eliminated transfer points between belt conveyors by offering belt conveyors with horizontal curves, an important consideration for conveying dusty mate- rial. Three different curved-belt conveyors in the same plant will be supplied to eliminate as many chutes as possible and the corresponding issues, such as fugitive dust and noise, as well as wear and maintenance. LHOIST selected RBL-REI to design and construct a 3.5-km overland conveyor that will deliver lime to the existing process plant based in Tarnow, Poland. Due to the narrow corridor avail- able between the quarry and the plant, RBL-REI had to engineer a system including a transfer point between the origin and the destination of the mineral. The innovative solution developed by the French engineering company consists in a single flight system, meaning the same belt is working upstream and down- stream the transfer point. A belt deviation system without motor- ization has been specially developed for this project to unify the two sections. This design has several benefits. The possibility of chute clogging has been eliminated with no stopping time difference between the two sections. Capital costs are optimized by eliminating drives and a substation at the transfer point. RBL-REI is currently delivering two decline conveyors for coal extraction for a mine in Turkey's Soma basin owned by Polyak Eynez. This system, designed to convey run of mine coal from 650 meters (m) underground to the coal washing plant on surface, will be the most impressive of its kind in Turkey, according to RBL-REI, as it will be fitted with a total of 9,000 kilowatts (kW) of drive power and high-tension belt- ing. These tremendous conveyors are expected to be commis- sioned during the fourth quarter of this year. Pipe Conveyors Protect Sensitive Areas At bauma in Munich, BEUMER Group provided information on its system solutions expertise for material handling proj- ects. The company's portfolio includes curved belt conveyors, blending bed systems as well as ship loaders. Discussing recent projects, Andrea Prevedello, global sales director for BEUMER Group, mentioned a coal-fired power plant in Flémalle, Belgium, where coal residues were landfilled on a fly ash stockpile. BEUMER installed a pipe conveyor to transport the fly ash to the Maas River for ship- ment. "Its enclosed design prevents the material from coming into contact with the environment and enables a low-noise transport to the destination," Prevedello said. "This was very important as the system runs over public motorways, railways and residential areas. The transport of the fly ash is carried out in strict compliance with safety standards, taking into consideration environmental protection and the effect of noise pollution on the local residents. The plan is to disperse the entire stockpile within the next 10 years, and repurpose the terrain into a nature park."
