Based in Peine in northern Germany, Prakla can trace its roots back to the foundation of Seismos in 1921. In 1952, it introduced its first rig equipped with a rotary table, and it followed this six years later with the introduction of a top-drive rig. Since 2004, Prakla has been part of the Bauer group, with its rigs being used by sister companies within the group as well as by customers in Africa, Russia and many other parts of the world. The company's seven-model range runs from the RB-8R, a small crawler-mounted rig for geothermal drilling, to the RB-50 universal drilling rig which can handle borehole diameters of 108-1,200 mm (4-47 in.) and drilling depths of up to 1,200 m. A standard feature of all of the truck-mounted universal rigs is the ability to adapt them to any drilling system, Pelleter said, so that they can be used for reversecirculation, diamond coring or down-the-hole, as conditions demand. "The concept came from the need to drill waterwells in Germany, since over 80% of our drinking water comes from boreholes," he explained. "Rock conditions can change a lot from site to site, so it made sense to be able to use the same rig for different drilling techniques. "We can supply everything that you need for drilling," he added, noting that Prakla is the largest manufacturer of drills in Germany. "Not only do we have experience in all of the equipment needed for drilling, but we are the only company in the world to provide training for drill operators that gives them a 'license' to show their competency." While Prakla has traditionally focused on truck-mounted rigs, its new top-of-the-range RB-T90 is carried on a four-axle semi-trailer. With a 90 mt pull-back capability, it has a hydraulic top drive and an innovative pipe-handling system. The company is currently in the process of fulfilling an order for six of these machines from China, for use 2013 • VDMA MINING SUPPLEMENT in mine-rescue situations where large-diameter drilling might be needed to depths of up to 800 m. With a self-contained compressor and using double-wall pipe, one of these rigs will feature prominently on the company's stand at bauma 2013. Power comes from a 708 kW Caterpillar C27 engine, with the mast standing 23 m high and the rig having a transport weight of around 51 mt.
