NEWS-CONTINUED (U.S. & Canada Regional News - from p. 10) toward the end of the mine life. This would be expected to drive higher production and lower costs at the beginning of the mine life, enhancing both cash flow and the overall economics of the project. The Rainy River project is located approximately 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario. The property has excellent infrastructure, with year-round road access and powerlines in close proximity, as well as a railway 21 km south of the property. The Fort Frances area has a population of about (Europe Regional News - from p. 22) totals 310,000 mt/y, including 60,000 mt/y mainly targeted for sales in the United Kingdom. The pricing structure is to be agreed upon at the time of entering into formal sales contract based on market conditions at the time. These framework agreements are in addition to a marketing agreement signed between Sirius and Keytrade AG in February for Keytrade to market up to 1.75 million mt/y of granulated polyhalite from the York project. Sirius also reports that discussions concerning polyhalite supply agreements 10,000 people from which a workforce could be sourced for future development. New Gold Executive Chairman Randall Oliphant said, "We have followed Rainy River for some time and see this as an opportune time to add this great asset to our portfolio. We view the combination of Rainy River's ideal location, sizeable reserve, robust production potential and experienced team as presenting a truly compelling opportunity." New Gold currently has four producing mines and two significant development projects. The producing mines are the New Afton mine in British Columbia, Canada; the Cerro San Pedro mine in San Luis Potosí state, Mexico; the Mesquite mine in California, United States; and the Peak mines in New South Wales, Australia. E&MJ; profiled the recently developed New Afton mine in its September 2012 issue, p. 54. New Gold also owns 100% of the Blackwater project in British Columbia, Canada, and 30% of the El Morro project in northern Chile. New Gold is forecasting company-wide production of between 440,000 and 480,000 oz of gold in 2013. remain ongoing with a range of customers, including major distributors and fertilizer blenders around the world. Chris Fraser, managing director and CEO of Sirius, said, "This further customer endorsement of the market for polyhalite is just the beginning but demonstrates a clear need and market for this sustainable multinutrient form of potash. Customers both here in the United Kingdom and around the world are seeing significant agronomic value in our products and are encouraging us to reach production as fast as possible." The York potash project currently has an inferred resource of 820 million mt at a mean polyhalite grade of 87.3%. The deposit is contained within the Permian Zechstein evaporites, which have been mined extensively for potash and halite in both the United Kingdom and northwestern Europe. Twin vertical shafts will be sunk to a depth of 1,500 m to access the deposit. Slurried concentrate produced at the mine site will be transported via a 44.5 km, 600to 700-mm-dia pipeline to a processing and port facility at Teesside. A parallel pipeline will return the transport water to the mine site. Capital cost to develop the York potash project is estimated at $1.7 billion.
