Mechel, BelAZ Agree on Long-term Truck Supply Arrangement
Russian mining and metals company Mechel OAO announced it recently signed a long-term partnership agree- ment with Belarusian truck builder BelAZ for delivery of mining trucks to Mechel's operations, along with spare parts provisioning.
Mechel said the two parties agreed in principle to a 10-year partnership in August 2011, when a Mechel delegation visited Minsk, Belarus, to discuss ways to improve Mechel Group's ties with Belarusian enterprises. Mechel CEO and Chairman Igor Zyuzin and BelAZ General Director Pyotr Parkhomchik later signed the agreement in the presence of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Belarusian President Alexander Luka- shenko, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Belarusian Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich, and other dignitaries. Mechel Group's mining division, which is one of BelAZ's chief customers in Russia, plans to acquire mining trucks mainly for use at its Elga coal deposit which has estimated reserves of 2.2 bil- lion mt of coking coal, located in south- eastern Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Mining at this deposit, which is one of the world's largest, commenced in August 2011.
Allied Nevada Gold Opts for Mincom Ellipse
Software developer Mincom announced in January receipt of a contract from Allied Nevada Gold Corp., a U.S.-based gold mining and exploration company, to deploy Mincom's Ellipse 8 Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software suite. Allied Nevada also licensed Mincom's LinkOne system for electronic parts cata- logs and maintenance manuals. Craig Jones, executive vice president, Mincom, said, "Currently 17 of the world's top 20 mining companies use Mincom's solutions to improve the effi- ciency and productivity of their opera- tions. We look forward to further extend- ing our domain expertise on behalf of today's mining leaders."
According to Mincom, the Ellipse solu- tion provides companies in asset-heavy industries with an integrated and mobile- enabled suite of applications that improves return on assets, while also addressing the challenges inherent in remote and geographically dispersed operations that distinguish these indus- tries from corporate-office environments. Allied Nevada operates the Hycroft gold mine located near Winnemucca,
Nevada. The company also owns more than 100 advanced and early-stage exploration properties located throughout the state of Nevada.
ABB Wins First Iron Ore GMD Contract
ABB has won an order to supply gearless mill drive (GMD) systems to power two grinding mills at the Serra Azul iron ore mine in southeast Brazil. The mine, owned by MMX Mineração e Metálicos, has a current production capacity of 8.7 million metric tons of iron ore per year, but is expanding and is expected to increase annual iron ore processing capacity to more than 24 million mt/y by 2015, allowing MMX to triple its output at Serra Azul. MMX Mineração e Metálicos, part of the EBX Group, oper- ates and owns iron ore mines in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The scope of supply for the project includes two GMD systems to power two 38-ft (11.6-m) SAG mills, as well as related transformers, ring motors and complete containerized electrical houses. The order is ABB's first GMD project in iron ore processing, its seventh in- stalled unit in Brazil and its 48th GMD installation in Latin America, according to the company.
