Antofagasta Receives
Go-ahead for Centinela
Expansion
On December 12, Antofagasta Minerals
received approval from environmental
regulators of a proposed expansion of its
Centinela mine in northern Chile. The
project will cost around $4.35 billion
and will be done in two stages to increase
copper production and extend the life of
the mine until 2056.
The expansion could include building
a second concentrator plant, two new pits
and a deposit for additional thickened
tailings, among other things, the com-
pany said.
The initiative will also double its cop-
per production, increasing it to more than
400,000 metric tons of copper per year
over the next decade.
"With environmental approval, we will
be completing the engineering studies in
the coming months," Antofagasta Chief
Executive Ivan Arriagada said in a state-
ment. "We hope to submit this project to
the board of Antofagasta in 2018 once
these studies are done."

The Mupani mine will employ approx-
imately 1,000 people at full production,
as well as a substantial number of con-
tractors during development, construc-
tion, and commissioning of the project.
The mine design builds on the modern,
low-cost, mechanized room-and-pillar
mining method that is employed at Zim-
plats' current mining operations.
Once commissioned, Mupani ore will
be beneficiated at the existing Ngezi/
Selous processing facilities and smelted
in the 12.5-megawatt (MW) Zimplats fur-
nace, which was recently equipped with
modern remote-controlled hydraulic mud
guns for safe furnace tapping and upgrad-
ed furnace automation for online condi-
tion monitoring and safe process control.
Zimplats produced 290,400 oz of
platinum in its fiscal year to June 30,
269,500 oz in converter matte and
20,900 oz in concentrate sold.
