52 E&MJ; • MAY 2018 www.e-mj.com SUPPLIERS REPORT Liebherr announced an investment of $45 million in expanding its Newport News, Virginia, facility. The expansion will include the construction of three new buildings on 28 acres adjacent to the company's current manufacturing facil- ity. Once completed, the new facilities will total more than 251,000 ft 2 . The ex- pansion will offer space for Liebherr USA Co.'s new headquarters and administra- tive building, a production and workshop facility, and a warehouse and distribution building. Construction will run from July 2018 through the summer of 2020. The Liebherr Group has been headquartered in Newport News since it opened in 1970. Separately, the company reported a rev- enue increase of 9% year-over-year (yoy), with 2017 sales touching $12 billion. Sales of construction machinery and mining equipment rose by 14.5% yoy to $7.6 bil- lion. The key markets Germany and France showed particularly strong growth, the company reported. Sales performance in Eastern Europe, particularly in Russia, was encouraging, it reported. In the Far East, Australia and America, revenues were also above the previous year's level, it reported. The Near and Middle East and Africa, how- ever, recorded a fall, Liebherr reported. FLSmidth Closes Buyout of Sandvik Projects Business FLSmidth announced the completion of its acquisition of the Sandvik Mining Sys- tems projects business. The acquisition includes continuous surface mining and minerals handling technologies and com- petences that strengthen the company's core minerals business. FLSmidth will either assume existing orders or provide project management services on behalf of Sandvik for active contracts. FLSmidth reported the acquisition enables it to cover a wider range of the full-mining value chain, from the primary crushing point in the mine and the trans- port from pit to plant all the way through the minerals processing plant to the tailings handling. "With the completion of the South African assets, we have added references, local expertise and improved ability to de- liver complete solutions to our Sub-Saharan customers," said Manfred Schaffer, group executive vice president, minerals division. Separately, FLSmidth launched SAG- wise total process control, a process op- timization solution. Via acoustic sensors and proprietary process control software, induced impacts, generated inside the SAG mill, are monitored and interpreted by the system. It registers undesirable high-energy impacts caused by steel balls striking the mill liners. Then, an advanced process control solution makes small and frequent adjustments to mill operational conditions that reduce those impacts, im- proving ore reduction and energy efficien- cy. The system reduces energy consump- tion by up to 6%, the company reported. Benefits include up to 45% reduction of ball-on-liner impacts, prolonging liner life and minimizing media degradation. First Stage Oil Sand Pump Runs 4,800 Hours GIW Minerals reported one of its first-stage pumps, a TBC-67, capable of handling a max particle size of 127 to 152 millimeters (mm) and prolonged high-pressure loads, proved operational for 4,800 hours be- tween shutdowns at an oil sands operation near Fort McMurray. There, an unplanned outage can cost $60,000. A competitor's pump achieved 1,300 hours before need- ing replacement. GIW custom-built a pump built on specifications basted on operating Liebherr Invests $45 Million in Facility GIW's custom TBC-67 was designed to operate for 4,000 hours before components need to be replaced.
